Take a broad view over Shimizu bay from Kunou mountain, where Ieyasu Tokugawa was buried at Tousho-gu. Many ships are drifting by and we see the bay was very prosperous.

The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido

Depict staions along the Tokaido, one of the five main roads in Japan from Tokyo to Kyoto. It is said he went by following Feudal lord's procession and this was his first travel to Kyoto.

Who is Hiroshige Utagawa?

Hiroshige was one of the last great Ukiyo-e artists in that tradition. His art is famous for beautiful indigo blue as well as its bold contrast among Europe and America. This blue is known as Japan Blue or Hiroshige Blue. Hiroshige’s One Hundred Famous Views of Edo greatly influenced French Impressionists such as Monet. Vincent Van Gogh copied two of the One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, which were among his collection of ukiyoe prints.
